FROM THE MOUTH OF BABES, 2022

From the Mouth of Babes is a series consisting of two portrait drawings that explore youth, innocence, and the unique perspective that children bring to our understanding of the world.

The title originates from a childhood memory. I recall saying something that my mother considered unexpectedly insightful, to which she responded with a knowing smile, “From the mouth of babes.” Although the moment itself was fleeting, the phrase remained with me for many years. Its meaning continued to resonate, reminding me of the way wisdom, honesty, and clarity can sometimes emerge from the most unexpected voices.

Traditionally, the phrase is associated with the biblical verse that speaks of praise coming from the mouths of infants and children. In this series, however, I have chosen to interpret the expression more broadly. Rather than focusing solely on praise, I use it to draw attention to the observations, questions, and concerns expressed by young people. Children often engage with the world in ways that are unfiltered, sincere, and direct. Their perspectives can challenge assumptions, reveal overlooked truths, and encourage deeper reflection among adults.

The drawings seek to capture this sense of innocence and curiosity while acknowledging the value of youthful voices within society. They invite viewers to consider what children are communicating through their words, actions, and experiences, and to reflect on the responsibility of those in positions of authority to listen attentively and respond where necessary.

Rendered in fineliner, the portraits continue my exploration of drawing as a tool for observation and storytelling. Through careful mark-making and portraiture, the works aim to preserve a sense of vulnerability, honesty, and humanity that is often associated with childhood.

Ultimately, From the Mouth of Babes is both a celebration of youth and a call to listen more closely. It reflects the belief that meaningful insight can emerge from any voice, regardless of age, and that the perspectives of young people deserve recognition within broader social and cultural conversations.
